Total Knee Replacement

One of the most important orthopaedic surgical advances of this century, knee replacement was first performed in 1968. Improvements in surgical materials and techniques since then have greatly increased its effectiveness. About 365,000 total knee replacements are performed each year in the United States.

The knee is the largest joint in the body. Nearly normal knee function is needed to perform routine everyday activities.

The knee is made up of the lower end of the thigh bone, which rotates on the upper end of the shin bone, and the knee cap, which slides in a groove on the end of the femur. Large ligaments attach to the thigh bone and shin bone to provide stability. The joint surfaces where these three bones touch are covered with articular cartilage, a smooth substance that cushions the bones and enables them to move easily.

Disease or injury can disrupt the harmony of the joint, resulting in pain, muscle weakness, and less function.

Our surgeons are experienced with hip replacements.
